The 144 acres of the "Lost Forty" were created when loggers excluded it due to a surveyor's error in 1882. The gigantic trees here are up to 350 years old. You are likely to spot eagles and other wild life if you hike here. It's quite a drive from the Twin Cities but a worthwhile side trip if you are in Walker, Bemidji or Cass Lake. Just hiked it today for the first time. Very impressive trees and a lovely one mile hike through 350 year old white and red pines. Beautiful old growth beasts that soar to the heavens and smell so fresh.

We lived in Cass Lake when I was a teen and spent some time here with my family. I haven't been back to the forest since then.

Nothing of the trees on their own. The trees' size are hard to capture without a human being next to them to put it in perspective. A google image search brings up a good array of pics, but nothing really captures the feel of being there.

As an aside, this is kind of an interesting thread on the BWCA and old growth trees in MN: BWCA look'n for big trees- old growth Boundary Waters Trip Planning Forum

If you're coming up from the TC I'd recommend a road trip to the area with several stops--I'd visit Scenic State Park (perhaps to camp a night) before heading west to the Lost 40 and over to the Bemidji area (see headwaters of Mississippi).
