My husband and I will be relocating to Gulfport within the next few months. I currently reside in New Jersey and have never been to the Gulf coast. We are looking for a nice two bedroom apartment/condo complex in a safe area. We don't have children, so schools aren't an issue. We are interested in Long Beach, but I was curious how affected that area was by Katrina? We've been looking online at the Arbor Station complex, but it's hard to tell how nice something is unless you see it in person. Any insight into Gulfport and the neighboring areas would be helpful. Thanks!

Long Beach is very safe. Most of the homes along the beach highway are no longer there. However, if you drive the area where Long Beach and Pass Christian meet, there are quite a few new apartments and condos right across from the beach. Further into Pass Christian across from the marina are some very high end condos.

North of the beach, Long Beach has lots of affordable, middle class homes and subdivisions. The area is considered very safe. I would describe as semi-developed and semi-rural as you go north from the beach highway.

Gulport and Biloxi have many high-rise condos along the beach highway. North of the beach highway, the nicer parts of these towns are roughly along Courthouse Rd in Gulfport as it winds around just south of Bernard Bayou (and north of Pass Rd and east of Hwy 49) and there are some nice apartments in this area including some backing up to the bay. The subvisions just north of Bernard Bayou off Cowan Lorraine Rd are upscale.

Biloxi neighborhoods just east of the Gulfport line, north of Pass Rd and south of Biloxi Bay are nice. I believe there are some nice apartments around there as well as north of Biloxi Bay and south of I-10. You didn't ask about Ocean Springs but this is a very nice area. Most everything norh of I-10 is relatively new.
