I may be on a southern driving trip this fall that will take me into MS, and wondered if there are any charming, southern towns I should stop in or stay in on my drive. I am flexible on the route, so I'm looking for towns with nice, old architecture and nice downtowns. Any suggestions?

Having just retured from Mississippi last month, I'm going to say that Oxford, and maybe Tupelo would be up your alley.

If you have any interest in history like the Civil War and Antebellum homes maybe, I definately recommend Vicksburg and Natchez.

Canton has a pretty neat downtown area. A Time to Kill, My Dog Skip, and O Brother Where Art Thou were filmed there. Also, the Canton Flea Market is always a big event that might interest you since you are planning a fall trip (2nd Thursday in May and October). They also deck it out for Christmast (late Nov - end Dec.).

Oxford would definitely be fun to visit. I'll have to be sure my drive doesn't coincide with a fall football game, however.....unless I'm prepared for traffic jams! I love college football, but prefer, at this point in life, to watch the games on TV. Anyway, does anyone have any photos of Oxford? I looked on Flickr, but they aren't that good.

I would guess then, if we were to spend a couple of days in Tunica and then head back to AR, Oxford would not be too far out of our way, right or maybe just spend some time there while still in Tunica.

Marmac, how far is brookhaven and what direction?

Ya know, you would think we were taking a 3 week Europian trip the way I am getting excited. Instead we are taking off 4 days... It doesn't take much to excite an old lady.
