Hello everyone.
I was wondering what you think about mobile/modular homes in Mississippi. I was visiting some family a few weeks ago and I wasn't able to tell that this wonderful home was a mobile home in The Delta. I would like to find one with some land. I will be moving from Wisconsin this Summer to the Jackson/ surrounding area. Thank you in advance.

I have seen some very clean and neat mobile home installations, with porches, carports, foundations and the like. And then there are the ones that look like Snuffy Smith may live there.

I would use a mobile home only if I built a tornado shelter at the same time. They are really not all that expensive. You just will not believe the tension in the air when those sirens go off and the night air gets still. Being from Wisconsin, you may not be afraid at first. But as Yoda said, "You will be....You will be."

An aunt and uncle of mine moved into a "premanufactured home" in the 70's, then kept upgrading it. It now has an attached multi-car garage and several additional rooms including a sauna. You have to know what you're looking for to see which rooms are "mobile" and which aren't.

That being said, my uncle is a skilled carpenter and took very good care of his home and such "upgraded" mobile homes are fairly rare. You'll be more likely to find a regular "stick built" home on some land. Most people just live in the mobile home as purchased.

Also, I'd have to do a VERY thorough inspection (even hiring a professional) before I'd buy a "used" mobile home. And yes, there is a market for pre-owned mobile homes just like for pre-owned vehicles.

Good luck with your search. Incidentally, you'll be more likely to find land for sale that you can put a mobile home on later.
