Why does Mississippi get such a bad rap? (Biloxi, Ocean Springs: schools, living in)

Relatively few people have even been to Mississippi. It wouldn't surprise me if it is one of the least visited states in the country. Mississippi is also a favored political punching bag. National and progressive media have successfully portrayed the state as a 'redneck' haven that is poor because it is conservative—a narrative without basis. In short, partisan politics has most to do with Mississippi's hyper-negative portrayal in popular media.

Lived in Biloxi for a while- LOVED it!!! Spent a year there, just to see what it was like. 3 blocks from Beau Rivage!! Pre-Katrina. Good times

Lived in Ocean Springs three years, loved everything but Katrina. At that time Mississippi welcome signs proclaimed Mississippi, Feels Like ComingHome. I couldn’t agree more.

The old fashioned way. They EARN it.

If you have money, don't care about politics or lean heavily to the right, and don't have kids to educate, mississippi can be a great place to live. But the state is overwhelmingly poor, so if you're used to living in places that do things for their residents, you won't be happy here. Schools suck, infrastructure sucks, there's little for residents to do outside of restaurants and bars, and there's especially nothing for adolescents to do.

People see the image of the past & present statistics. It's the same ole same ole routine: Poverty, Rascism, & Bad Stats.

We're living in a big city economics so if your biggest city doesn't hold 51%+ of your state worth or large plurality then it's flyover. People's ranting about state when really the main attractions are big cities generally.

What gives? First misconceptions from TV, and now social media. Really it relates to anywhere in the south.

Most peoples knowledge of the south comes from watching "Dukes of Hazard" reruns and now just nonsense spewed in social media.
