We will be moving to Ms to be closer to family along the coast.

If you had to choose between Hattiesburg or Brandon ,which area would you prefer and why?

I really appreciate the advice and insight. I have no idea where to start, but with aging family, being closer is a necessity. I'm currently an hour north of Atlanta, so nice to have amenities, parks, restaurant and grocery delivery, but i don't expect too much.

We were thinking close to Jackson would be better, but open to suggestions and advice.

If you're moving to be close to relatives on the coast, move to Hattiesburg and actually be close to those relatives. Jackson gives you a 3 hour, mind numbingly dull drive to the coast, Hattiesburg cuts that in half.
Yes there are some things in Jackson that you won't find in Hattiesburg. But not THAT much...

We've considered Hattiesburg, but access to the best cardiologists is a priority, and having a large Metro area nearby seems to offer more choices for parks, restaurants, etc. I just don't know much about Hattiesburg.
The kids are in Mobile and Baton Rouge.

I'm not familiar with medical care in Hattiesburg, but I think is fine, likely as good as Jxn.

If you looking for the "best cardiologists" you may not necessarily find that in Jackson. Jackson has fine doctors, but I doubt many doctors in Jxn would rank among "the best." People here routinely go to Oschners, UAB, Vanderbilt, Mayo Clinic, etc., for advanced medical care. We have fine cardiologists, and one performed surgery on a family member, but if you are truly looking for the best, Jxn may not be your best option.

Between Jxn and Hattiesburg, Jxn seems to have more options. Mum in law has a pacemaker.

I think I agree with this. Hattiesburg is really not a bad place at all, quite the contrary. You have military around, so that generally keeps the schools viable. You have the university, so that keeps it vibrant and lively. Big enough to have amenities. There are some cool outdoorsy things around there too, you have the canoeing, I'm not sure about walking trails. Good economy. And definitely a good location for getting to coastal areas faster.

Before you rule it out, I'd research your medical issues. I don't know much about that so I can't give you advice there.

I see three reasons you should move to the NOLA area, not Mississippi. Best doctors, large Metro, and centered between BR and Mobile.

Additionally, with gas prices possibly going higher, cutting the trip in half may save you a lot over money over the years.
