I remember hearing them in for the first time in '85 and again in '98...

Such an amazing sound.

Not yet, still a bit early. We may be in for a whopper of a year.

Major periodical cicada emergence imminent - Missouri is in for a noisy spring | CountyNewsLIVE.com (http://www.countynewslive.com/content/2011/apr/16/major-periodical-cicada-emergence-imminent-missouri-noisy-spring - broken link)

Quote:
Missouri witnessed the emergence of a particularly large brood of 13-year cicadas in 1998, so 2011 promises to be a noisy spring in much of the state. This year’s emergence is expected to cover most of Missouri. The Bootheel and part of northwest Missouri will escape the phenomenon. If this disappoints you, cheer up. The existence of multiple broods means you don’t actually have to wait 13 or 17 years for the next emergence. Other single-brood emergences are expected in northern Missouri in 2014 and in west-central and southeastern Missouri in 2015.

Couldn't hear anything in my neck of the woods over the frogs and crickets these evenings but looking forward to the cicadas joining the choir!

It's nature's nightly orchestra for country folk, and on special evenings, nature evens throws in a light show with heat lightning on the horizon.

And you can't beat that free price!!

Cicadas only sing during the daylight.

Sorry since we feel the need to split hairs here - I should have said evening more than once.

I see it as the two groups of critters taking turns so they don't talk over each other.

My city slicker wife hates them because she can't talk over them.

I've never been able to talk over her but that doesn't mean I hate her.

Most of the time anyway.

LOL Dave. How about them Whipporwills ? Them things holler all night ? My wife is an ex city slicker (KC) too, but has adapted well . She even puts up with my chickens , except when they eat up her flowers.
