HORSE-THIEF CAPTURED

Elza Leak was captured in Sedalia by Constable Robb and taken to Cooper county, where he will be tried for horse stealing. Leak was riding a fine mare, the property of Charles Frederich, of Gooch Mills. Leak admitted having stolen the animal. He was chased through three counties, and arrested on a description by telephone from Pilot Grove.

James J Gilpin was arrested at Batesville by Deputy United States Marshal Osmer of St. Louis, on a charge of manufacturing and circulating counterfeit money.

WHAT THE MAYOR OF ST. JOSEPH DID

Mayor John Coombe of St. Joseph was awakened by a burglar in his residence, sprang out of bed and was groping in the dark for his revolver, when the intruder entered the room and exacted a promise that no member of the family would stir until the premises had been searched for valuables. At the point of a pistol Coombes got back in bed, and remained there until notified by the visitor that he was ready to leave, and that the police might be summoned.

MAIL ROBBERS CONFESS GUILT

Frank Brooks, Milton Rankin and Fred Kelly, suspected of the theft of three bags of mail at Huntsdale and arrested by Fred C Brown, county sheriff at McBaine Jan. 9, have all made written confessions of their guilt. Deputy U.S. Marshal Smith arrived here this morning and took the three prisoners to Jefferson City at 2:30 this afternoon where they will be held for trial in the federal court. Frank Brooks served terms in the Kansas and Texas penitentiaries and in the federal penitentiary at fort Leavenworth, Kan. All of the men have admitted being party to numerous recent cases of burglary in the west.

BURGLARS GET SILVERWARE

The home of Richard Morrey at No. 315 North Sarah street, was robbed of silverware last night while the family was visiting at the home of J.W. Van Cleave, No. 5963 Cabanne avenue.
When Mr. Morrey returned to his home at 8 o'clock he found that silverware and a .38 revolver had been taken. The burglars entered through a side window. The home of Mr. Morrey was robbed early in June.

A FEMALE DIAMOND THIEF

A bold diamond robbery at Joplin led to the capture of a notorious female robber who has a dozen or more names. This women arrived in Joplin from St. Joseph with another woman named Wells. She registered at the Keystone Hotel under the name of Nellie Jackson. About noon she went to Miller's pawn shop and sneaked two diamond rings. The police were notified and she was arrested.

TIED TO A TELEPHONE POLE

Julius Rothschild, while returning to Huntsville from Moberly at night, was held up by highwaymen and robbed of $89. He had attended a wedding party at Moberly, and on his return was stopped and tied to a telephone pole, where he remained until daylight.

Joseph Nellis was arrested yesterday on a charge of highway robbery, which occurred last July. The complaining witness is Miss Nora Doyle of No. 4329 Peck street, who declares that Nellis grabbed her pocketbook, containing $19 from her hands at Second street and East Grand avenue.

SUSPECTS ARRESTED

In connection with the attempted hold-up and robbery of A.G. Fish, the Frisco telegrapher, who was probably fatally shot by highwaymen near Union Station early Sunday morning. Detectives Killian and Murphy yesterday made the following arrests: Louis Stubinger, Al Smith, Dan Kelleher and Mike Kiely. All of the prisoners protest their innocence.

ATTACKED BY HIGHWAYMEN

While standing at the corner of Fourth and Elm streets at 1:30 last night, Tom Shea of No. 119 South Seventh street and Charles Guignon of No. 308 South Fourth street were attacked by three men who demanded their money. Shea and Guignon refused to shell out and were assaulted. In the combat Shea was knocked down and robbed of $4.50. The assailants then fled.
Sergeant Doyle and Officer Stangler, arriving at the scene a few minutes after the assault, gave chase to the highwaymen. Nede Silverman was arrested. He admitted he was the man who had knocked Shea down, but denied he had secured any of the loot.

POSTMASTER UNDER ARREST

Poplar Bluff, Mo., Oct 8---William Goodwin, postmaster at attie, Oregon county, was arrested today charged with rifling registered letters. His alleged pilferings will amount to over $1,000. He was held to await trial in the Federal Court in St. Louis.

ESCAPED FROM JAIL

Fred Erle and Frank Murray escaped from the jail in Savannah at night, by sawing through the roof. Erle is charged with the murders of Guy Speelman and H.K. Speeth, whose bodies were found near Savannah July 22. Murray is charged with stealing $77 from James Wilson.
