I am moving to Cape Girardeau from Memphis, TN in about a month. I am very interested in the loft apartments in the GM building downtown.
Can anyone tell me about the downtown area, safety, places to go, etc? I will be working at Saint Francis Hospital but don't like the idea of living in an apartment complex.
Any feedback would be extremely helpful.
The loft I am looking at can be found at the web address liveontheriver.com

Here's the link

Mississippi Riverfront Downtown Lofts Cape Girardeau, Missouri

I've only been to the riverfront a couple times, but it was nice. Although there was an old theater that Dad went to as a teenager that was in bad shape.

From everything I've heard, Cape Girardeau seems pretty safe. But I've never lived there.

The local station is KFVS12. You could try there for additional info:

Read all the previous threads about Cape Girardeau on City Data. Lots of info out there. It's a great small town, very beautiful. Many locals have worked very hard at making Cape a great place to live and visit. Just like any other place, there are things you need to be aware of.

Kitty,
The Cape Girardeau / Jackson areas are a decent place to live. The general cost of living is low and so is the crime rate. The schools are decent. The area is slightly low on attractions and the arts, but has good dinning.

I live in Cape and really want to live downtown (in the lofts you refer to, in fact). The downtown is struggling, but I would love to live there and try to help it survive. I love Cup n Cork and think it would be great to roll out of bed and head on down there! Beware of the nightly train noise, though!
