I lived in Springfield and SW MO.NW AR/ NE OK area for nearly 30 years.

St.Louis and KC are the most progressive cities in MO. I went to Columbia twice in 2005 for medical reasons, I was surprised to find the University hospital with few black or white employees. Most were Muslim. The doctor was from India and incredibly rude. The doctor took my records, did not return all and then lied about it. They hospital was no less unhappy than I.

As a whole, big U towns is not indicitive of much except the local economy is fueled by the Unniverity. The town with a campus population of 30,000 does not necessarily indicate progress any more than a chuch run city does.

Springfield has two very large churches: AGs and the Baptists. There has always been a bit of a older Hippy, communal, Vegetarian, anti-conservative, anti-establshment, mystical, not in any big hurry kind of vibe around the campus. I never particularly understood it, I just enjoyed it; it was never like the Hippy's of the '60s. And it is entirely different than the vibe of of the colleges and university in Joplin and even in Rolla. If you do not take yourself too seriously, the U at Springfield is a pretty good school and not a bad place to learn at all.

Now that I think about it, there were hippie enclaves in the Doniphan and Van Buren areas back then, too.
Hmmmmmm.
In VAN BUREN and DONIPHAN! Especially Doniphan that is shocking. That is the least place in the south I'd expect hippies other than MS maybe. Doniphan has been pretty right wing since the end of the civil war. Heck the governor even had to send in the national guard in the 1870s because the Klan was so out of control in Oregon County during state level reconstruction.

Commonwealth College was formed as a left-leaning school and Faubus was accused of attending a "communist" school by his political opponents.

Could Springfield be a small version of an Austin Texas then? Being Austin in the middle of rural Texas, and it's a liberal mecca in a conservative state.

I assume your talking about Huey Long with mentioning Louisiana. He was alot closer to a communist than Orval Faubus ever dreamed of being.

You may be thinking of Schwagstock, held at Camp Zoe, not too far from Eminence. They've had some...uh...legal troubles since late 2010, but that's a topic for a whole different thread.
