The building of ThyssenKrupp AG’s $5 billion steel mill arrived at an opportune moment for the Mobile area’s construction industry, throwing a life preserver to some firms that otherwise might have gone without work.
It’s also been a boon to other businesses, from equipment rental firms and industrial supply houses to hotels and restaurants.
By building the project during a particularly deep construction bust, the German steelmaker has benefited from intense competition among contractors and lower materials costs. The poor economy has probably saved ThyssenKrupp money, even though the budget for the project rose to $5 billion from $3.7 billion when it was announced.
Though the peak of construction may have passed, substantial work is likely to continue at the 3,600-acre site on the Mobile-Washington county line for two years or more.
For example, Mobile-based Rob’t J. Baggett Inc. won $40 million worth of work over multiple contracts, installing piping in the hot strip mill and the carbon steel cold rolling mill, two of the largest parts of the complex.

Default Promise of May 11, 2007, now a reality at ThyssenKrupp complex

Quote:
This week, ThyssenKrupp will officially open its $5 billion U.S. complex.
"Considering the economy and the downfalls that we've all experienced, it's such a good feeling that this is happening, especially with the melt shop announcement," said Zimmerman, now director of economic development for the Mobile chamber. The melt shop had been delayed as ThyssenKrupp tried to push back construction costs when the economy faltered.

On other economic development possibilities:

For the past several weeks, Jones has been dropping hints about a pending economic development coup for the city.

On Friday, he said that Mobile is on the verge of netting two “substantial prospects.” Announcements could come within the next 60 days, Jones said.

When a member of the audience asked whether Jones could be more specific, the mayor cited confidentiality agreements. “We are talking to people all over the world all the time. That’s about all I can tell you,” he said.
