I read an article today on al.com about amtrak and I sure hope it works out. Being a mobilian in the aerospace industry, I’m hopeful something like this will enable us to have a larger workforce in aerospace by allowing commuter passenger rail from nearby cities to come train and work here. I’d really like to see some components being built here. Airbus has its school here along with coastal Alabama’s and bishop state gearing up to launch their program. Overall, the tourism aspect of Amtrak is cool but as the article stated, they’re goal is daily ridership. That’s just my take on the whole thing.

FAA approves MAA's Master Plan, which includes moving the main passenger airport downtown.

Announcement said the terminal opens early 2024.

Excellent news! A certain slam dunk for the "told ya so" crowd

It's being designed with an FIS, so they could call it international on day 1... but for actual scheduled international flights? Patience will be required

I could see "scheduled" international charters within 5 years of opening, but to places in close proximity in air miles: Cancun, Montego Bay, etc. Not holding my breath, though.

Is this news? The master plan would always be approved, unless it was a safety problem.

Now you have to pay for it. And the article says "hope to be open" by 2024. COVID is going to make this much more difficult. And the "terminal" is already open. Any growth is now going to be driven by traffic, which is obviously down, even moreso now.

Good luck.

It has already proven to be a success.

There are many streams of funding available. Whether MAA gets it is another matter. There is a reason that this is being pushed right now, we all know what it is.

This study was administered before COVID, by the way.
