I'm in final interviews for a positon based in the Gulfcoast; after my inital post of deciding between Pensacola, Mobile and Biloxi - I think I've decided on Mobile.

I'm interested in independent food, resturants, bars, independent movies, farmers markets, and cool shopping.

I've done some research. Whats the diff between Midtown and Downtown? It seems like there's a lot of stuff concentrated downtown on Dauphin, but I can't find a concentration of stuff in Midtown? I see a lot of places scattered on Old Shell Rd. is that considered Midtown?

I've looked at the Tower on Ryan Park for apartments downtown, are there any apartments in Midtown by stuff?

Downtown and Midtown are cool, but don't set your expectations too high - especially if you have never visited the areas in person. Someone else can probably answer specifics better than I, but I can say that you will definitely not find a "concentration" of stuff (outside of some eateries/bars on Dauphin) anywhere in any of the cities listed, so you made a good choice in Mobile as it is at least the largest of the three.

Midtown isn't as walkable as downtown, and a car will be needed to go most places. Sure, lots of people jog and walk their dogs, and walk to certain places if they can/want to. Azalea Court up at the Loop would be a good location in close proximity to a lot of places. Windsor Warwick is kind of between midtown and downtown. Old Shell also has some cool places, but they aren't necessarily concentrated in one area like you said. Downtown would be the best for walkability and a concentration of stuff to do. The Tower on Ryan Park is nice and I'm sure you could work something out with them if you only wanted to live there a few months or something. You could also probably find a nice rental house in Midtown. A nice place is around the Loop near Mohawk St. or Westwood St.

I looked more into Biloxi yesterday, I like Biloxi's proximity to NOLA and a real airport; and the casino's have oodles to eat/see/do - like Jay Leno. I like Mobiles location since I will be covering from Biloxi-Pensacola and occasionally Tallahasee. The cost of living in Biloxi was higher than I expected; apparently since Katrina the area is booming. I'm now torn between Mobile and Biloxi. Mobile is more centrally located, nicer beaches, and cheaper; but I would be going to Biloxi for entertainment; and shopping and flying out of New Orleans.

I have my final interview the week of the 23rd and will find out if I got the job then, I don't want to overthink things, but I would like to be prepared in case I get it.

To me, Biloxi is more of a place to go visit, not really to live. It was devastated after Katrina and so much hasn't been rebuilt. They lost a lot of historic structures/houses and don't have much left. There isn't a real town center, just a strip of casinos. Again, it's fine for a little vacation, but I don't know if I could see myself there all the time.

From Mobile, New Orleans is 2 hours away, Biloxi is 45 minutes, Pensacola is 1 hour, Fairhope is 30-40 minutes away, the beach is 45 minutes to over an hour.

Also, Mobile has entertainment options. Music (local and famous, eg O.A.R. is coming to the Saenger), ArtWalk, events such as Beerfest, Bayfest, Woofstock, Mardi Gras, Crescent Theatre, Exploreum, dining, bars, clubs, galleries.

Ugh! I wouldn't live in Biloxi or anywhere on the MS Gulf Coast; I'm originally from that area- Ocean Springs which was well-known for having the nicest areas/schools in particular. I wouldn't live in Ocean Springs either.

I live in Mobile because the jobs are better, housing is less expensive (more attractive also), pay is better, and there is so much MORE going on. People simply have better taste here too; I'm sorry but it's true. While the casinos are there, the mindset is very provincial. Or laid-back , however you want to look at it. Shopping is terrible over there. We always drove to Mobile or NOLA to shop. All of my friends left and live in big cities.

As far as independent films, we have a theatre downtown that shows indie films- Crescent Theatre. There's a lot going on downtown and in Midtown for that matter. One thing Mobile has is heart; Biloxi sold that out to the casinos long ago. Bye bye local, long-time MS Gulf Coast eateries. We have a very strong Mobile Arts Council. A great Art Walk is arranged every month, etc.

Biloxi is just 45 minutes away from my house in Midtown. I have to say I rarely go over there to the casinos; it just isn't that fantabulous. It's not like they get anyone decent most of the time. Coldplay went to NOLA!

I've heard the Ramada downtown is really nasty unfortunately.. And I checked some online reviews to confirm this. I assume you are coming fairly soon, otherwise there is a new extended stay under construction that will hopefully be ready spring 2011 (maybe fall of 2010)- which I know is kind of far off so may not apply.
