I think Bozeman is comparable to Missoula as for summer weather. It's very dry but often hot. On the upside (as you're aware) the lack of humidity does make for relative comfort -- 80-85 Montana degrees, with 20% humidity, is way different from the same temp in NE with 70%. Also because it's dry and usually clear it gets cool at night. It's typical to have a 90-degree afternoon after a 52-degree morning.

Bozeman's nice but it does tend to get colder there in winter than in Western MT, if that's a concern. I also think Kalispell may be worth a look for you... jobs are in short supply everywhere in the state so I'd cast a wide net if I were you.

The most we ever need is a fan to move the cooler air inside. Have never had that stickiness that Midwesterners live with.
When I was a kid, if you needed air conditioning (inside a building or a car), it was called rolling down the window! But it helps not to have high humidity in Montana, either.

When I moved to Illinois, I got hit by a really bad humid summer night and had a difficult time breathing outside. It took a few years to get used to the humidity. When I've visited the Rocky Mountain states in the last year, I didn't notice any problems with breathing the air...maybe it helped that it seemed cleaner, as well!

I would suggest Billings. It is big enough to have a bunch going on and the people are nice. I don't think the cost of living is as bad as Bozeman, Missoula, or Kaslipell which I would avoid all three. Bozeman and Kalsipell are extremely pretentious and expensive. Missoula is expensive and a little less pretentious but when you get west of the Continental Divide (like Missoula and Kalspell) there are also a lot of very close-minded people who don't tolerate outsiders, although not being from California will help your case. .

Finding a job: Easy
Getting to the job: Easy
Find a place to sleep for the night: Book 3 weeks in advance minimum
Finding an apartment or house: You'd have better luck finding a rent controlled condo in New York.
