What's a Scotch cap? I think I need one...

You'll find a scotch cap in a western wear store. Heavy cap, usually of wool. Short bill in the front. Inside has flaps you can fold down to cover your ears. Just ask in any western store and they'll point you to them.

I just snapped a shot and posted it to my profile picture. You can see what it looks like by checking my profile.

Great shot, indeed! In the absence of a scotch cap, a swig of scotch would help one keep warm, too.

No, unless you work ouside. Just warm the car before you head out, grab some gloves and it's fine. I've honestly seen people wearing shorts in weather as low as the teens...

Just going into the office is pretty much jeans and long sleeve shirt with jacket.
I use layers as well when outdoors, Use Carharts or windy and wet I switch to Bass Pro Shops extreme weather Bibs has great wind resistance and breathes well.
Use a lot of Smart wool products socks for wicking moisture and long johns.
Use mittens with the slot you can stick fingers out of if required.

When I shovel snow if it's not too much below freezing I'll wear short sleeve shirt and no long-johns, I've even been known to shovel snow as well as chop wood with sandals on. Been doing it for half my life almost.
If I wear a jacket I come in soaked with sweat after working in the yard. If I go out for extended periods like fishing on ice or hiking in winter I'll layer up.
