WOW! I can't even imagine places that large or the price tag to buy that much land. If I see farms around here over 120 acres I think that's HUGE.

Nice to know there are still places that aren't chopping up all the land into 5 acre subdivision lots.

Yeah it's pretty awsome, the amount of large farms/ranches here. But what most people fail to realize is that most of ranches are passed down, a lot of the time for 100+ years, And the leased land often comes in 100 year leases (the lease holder <also can be inherited> has the option to release the land before the prior lease is up) My family's ranch was purchased by my great grandfather for $.01 an acre after he imagrated to the U.S. Now that sounds like a hell of a deal, but then it was a stretch for him. He worked hard and had wise investments, and by the time my grandfather was born he had a decent chunk of land that was supporting him and his famliy nicely. I hope that i have the drive and determination to one day say the same.

Good or bad, most of the really big places were purchased (for unknown amounts of money) by rich folks from England. When the west was expanding they sent folks out to lay claim to parcels and then for a good fee, sell to the rich English oil Barron. Same happened in Wyoming.

Ever hear of Remitence men? Towns used to be cluttered full of them at the turn of 1900.

A lot of the Barrons never saw the property they owned but later sold for a healthy profit.

Is any of this sounding familiar???? Same thing is happening today, but from somewhere's South West of us.

Not sure if the OP's question is How many of us live on a Ranch, or is it How many people normally live on a Ranch.

Padlock Ranch North of Sheridan in the Montana side has about 1500 employee's. All living on the ranch.

That's not a ranch, it's a state!
