I'm not planning to attend any events as I'm pressed for time with only 3 days to drive up and back to San Diego.
Just drive up to the gate and pay the fee for the 17 mile drive

Where is this gate you speak of and how can I get to it? And are the roads smooth?

The roads are fine, nothing to worry about at all.

For the 17 mile drive gate just google Spanish Bay Inn which is right at the gate entrance. BTW, if you are going to do the drive and pay the entrance fee I recommend stopping at Spanish Bay or Pebble Beach for a meal. They will take off the fee you paid to enter on your food bill. Plus they both have great food and awesome views!

Also while in Pacific Grove take the scenic route down Sunset Drive and around to Lover's Point. That drive is free but some argue just as beautiful as the 17 mile drive. If you don't know where these places are just look at the map I linked to and it will be obvious.
