Seems like much of the western portion of the country has figured it out. I wish the East would catch up.

Unless it's a sport quad you really don't need to be driving it on the road. Utilities aren't built to run at high rpms constantly for long periods of time like being on the road. You'll just run the engine to death. The engines on sport quads are built for high rpms and plus you can change out the sprocket and make the engine run at lower rpms at high speeds. You'll lose some acceleration but not that much to make a difference.

But that has nothing to do with ATV's being legal on the highway or not .

Huh?

My Polaris 400 Big Boss 6x6 and newer Sportsman 500 6x6 have no difficulty running in 35-40 mph traffic on the roads .... and have a seriously capable hauling function with that box in the back.

Friends with 500cc Honda, Polaris, and other other brands of ATV's have no difficulty with urban use .... and I'm not seeing these vehicles "run to death" at the normal speeds they drive them. I do have one neighbor with a water cooled Suzuki that he claims will do 80 mph ... I know I've followed him at 50 mph and he was leaving me behind in my pick-up truck.

They don't get run "on the highway" ... they're used for urban transport and some street use as I do, heading out from my ranch on public roads to my irrigation headgates away from my property.

I do ride a sport quad. I have a 2006 Suzuki LT-R450, and at the bottom of 5th, without getting into high rpms, I can cruise at 45...easily. But there's tons of utilities perfectly capable of handling speeds of 45 and up. Especially the big boys with 700+ cc's.

My '05 Honda Rubicon (500cc) is about to turn 9000 trouble free
miles many areas are long and flat in the desert even riding 60 + miles
at a time at higher speeds in temps over 100° I have to say the above
statement to be only an opinion as far as a Honda anyway.

I service mine by the book and change out the air filters about every
third ride or sooner if they need it, And I always do a complete
Pre-Ride Inspection before it's even loaded.

In order to get an ATV registered in Arizona it must have the following equipment:

At least one brake that can be operated by hand or foot.
Brake light.
At least one, but not more than two, headlights that shine at least 500 feet ahead.
At least one taillight visible for at least 500 feet to the rear.
At least one red rear reflector, if not part of the taillight.
License plate securely fastened to the rear of the ATV.
License plate light.
Horn audible from a distance of at least 200 feet.
Muffler in good working order and in constant operation. Muffler cutout, bypass or similar device prohibited.
Rear view mirror.
Seat and footrests for the operator.
Fuel tank cap.
Same in California
Sandrails can be made street legal as well.

A exception is two stroke motorcycles. Used to have Enduros, take it camping and ride it to town. CA will not licence Enduros anymore. If you have one good, let the tags run out they will not sell you a licence tag.

I'm talking about speeds 55-65mph with traffic down the highway. 35-40mph is going to be a half or less than 3/4 throttle propbably for most utilites today and isn't a problem. If a utility has to run almost full throttle to reach 50-55mph I can promise you it isn't going to last long. I had a friend that had a Honda 300 4x4 and top speed was probably around 40mph? Well he took the highway to go home one day and of course he goes full thottle and about half way home, he blew the engine.

I own a Kawi KFX400(A Suzuki LTZ400) and specs say the top speed is 72mph. Now running speeds 40-50mph isn't a problem. But if I had to run 60+mph on the highway. I would buy a bigger sprocket, but thats me.

I was talking about utilities that have to basically come close to full throttle to reach the speed limit. I didn't specify so it's my fault. But your right, 700+ ccs shouldn't have a problem. Most of them can actually hang or actually beat 400class sport quads in acceleration. Especially the Can-Ams. Those are the strongest quads I have seen.

Yeah I could see some of the smaller 250's and such having trouble keeping up, but they're faster than scooters/mopeds, and I see those all over Virginia Beach. If they're allowed on the roads, I don't get why an ATV isn't.

I've never ridden a Can-Am before, but those Can-Am Renegades seem awesome. I wouldn't mind taking a DS-450 around the track either, haha.

There is a ATV park 25 miles from here in Goldsboro, NC called Busco's Beach. We ride there sometimes and they have a drag strip. Most of the time it's sport quads on the strip. Most are not factory and are damn quick. I have seen the Outlander 800 come up there and either own them or hang right there with them. I believe those are most powerful quads on the market right now. They can tear up a mud pit too.
