The Sting. The Marvin Hamlisch adaptation of Scott Joplins rags was memorable. A couple of other favorite scores are The Magnificent Seven and The Guns of Navarone.

Since nothing good has come out in the past decade ive switched over to movie scores and classical pieces. Ive found a lot of the pieces can either keep me alert and awake better than a cup of coffee or put me to sleep quicker than Benadryl. I know right now amazon is selling a lot of their soundtracks and scores for $4.99 (mp3 download). A lot of the film scores and such are very hard to find (low production maybe?) but theyre very much worth the effort. Ive found myself playing the Transformers and Incredible Hulk scores when I want some powerful and up beat music. Saving Pvt. Ryan and Braveheart when I want some stuff to destress or fall asleep to. Heck even Star Trek:TNG- Best of Both Worlds brings you the best of both worlds combining haunting melodies with powerful instrumentation.

Any other powerful scores out there? Id love to find the Star Trek:First Contact score but all i find is the soundtrack.

The music in the Magnificent Seven literally made the movie watchable. It was so bad before the music was written that it wasn't going to be released.

The Natural has to be the best score I can think of in it's emotionality.
The trumpet fanfare when the field's lights start exploding made that movie forever memorable to anyone who ever saw it.

Another remarkable music score from the Golden Age was from The Sea Hawk. Corngold's score alone but it apart from all the swashbucklers of the day, and defined forever what a sea adventure's music was supposed to sound like.

Dr. Zhivago's score was also wonderful.

Cabaret was a score looking for a movie as good as it was.
The stage play was a great success, but nowhere as powerful or as good as the movie. I think it's the best Hollywood musical ever.

Ive found I like scores heavy on the drums. Just something about the BOOM BOOM BABOOM that keeps me on the edge of my seat wanting more more more. Sometimes its better than an actual action flick. I got that Spotify app because it has a lot of music scores and soundtracks that I can listen to before buying them. A few surprises both good and bad but a very useful tool when picking out music especially for those on a budget.
