Grave of the Fireflies, and (although poorly executed) The Mist.

It was beyond touching and emotional, it was completely gut wrenching! I'll never watch it again. I was sobbing uncontrollably. Not an emotion I want to experience on Christmas Day. And not one most parents would want to put their child through on Christmas.

Anyone can kill a dog in a movie and make us sad. But Marley and Me took it to a whole new level. A level I enjoyed, as I love when a movie rips me into shreds.

How can anyone watch this scene without crying????

Dumbo - Sad scene - YouTube

Or this?

Disney's Bambi - Mother's Death - YouTube

But the saddest scene in any movie I've ever seen - the one that reduces me to a blubbering, sobbing mess every time is this:

Sophie's Choice - YouTube

Out of context, the scene is difficult to watch. In context, no words...

The movie is heartbreaking and exquisitely painful. Meryl Streep is at her very best throughout. It's one of the rare instances of a movie being as perfectly executed as the book it is based on. Meryl Streep won the Oscar that year as best actress in a leading role.

I'd add Schindler's List, Life is Beautiful, and The Butler to my list.

After we watched Life is Beautiful (which is a feast for the eyes and such a unique film!), my husband just sat there and openly cried - even more than I did.
