The Coen Brothers' "Miller's Crossing" was so under-rated it is practically criminal!
No pun intended, since this the Coens' homage to 1930s gangster flicks. It sports a tremendous cast, starring Albert Finney, Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro, and Marcia Gay Harden. The story line is wonderfully twisty, the dialogue is superb, and the cinematography at times breath-taking. I am a crime movie buff and have seen 'em all and this is perhaps my favorite. I rate it right up there with other gangster classics like Goodfellas, the Godfather Trilogy, and The Departed.
Yet, it is amazing how many people have never even heard of it; even those who call themselves movie buffs.
Two scenes NOT to be missed that are worth the price of admission alone: A bathrobe-clad, tommy gun firing Albert Finney, with "Danny Boy" playing in the background; and Turturro's "Look into your heart" monologue.
Just a handful of my personal favorites that I think have fallen under-the-radar and thus Under-rated (during that time)...
Very Bad Things (1998) Seven Years In Tibet (1997) That Thing You Do! (1996) Six Degrees Of Separation (1993) Office Space (1999) Tin Cup (1996)
