I am like Blinx. I have seen Citizen Kane once and even watched a how it was made documentary but that was it I don't need to see it again.
I am a Bogie fan and have seen Casablanca several times.
Comparing the 2 movies Casablanca is so much better. It has tense drama, longing love, a bit of comedy and the constant threat of Nazis.
Citizen Kane is a brooding sort of dark dwelling documentary. it is good but I don't need to see it again.
I once ordered Citizen Kane on Netflix to see what all the buzz was about. It was so predictable and boring. Halfway through I shut it off. Tried to watch again but it was just too bad a movie.
Kind of an argument as to what is artistically innovative vs what appeals to the masses. Both can be considered the Best Film of All Time, depending what you look for in a movie.
Casablanca. The music is memorable ("You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss..."); the cast--not just Bogart and Bergman but the supporting players were well-cast for their roles, and the acting is great all around; the dialogue/script is FABULOUS ("Round up the usual suspects!" "Play the Marsellaise!" "You can play it for her, you can play it for me!" "Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship..."). I especially like that Casablanca is a love story with WWII as the backdrop because I actually learned something from watching it as opposed to some random love story whose setting/historical context isn't relevant at all to the plot. I actually use the Marsellaise clip in my French classes.
I cannot say any of the above for Citizen Kane, and I have never understood why it has always been considered one of the greatest films of all time. I've watched it more than once and continue to scratch my head [wondering what is so great about it] at the end of each viewing...

For understanding, watch CK with Roger Ebert's expert commentary.
Also: A Viewer's Companion to 'Citizen Kane', by Roger Ebert... January 1, 2004 (this scratches the surface, the full commentary, heard while watching each scene being described, is comprehensive and essential)
Until I viewed CK with RE's help, I was in the never understanding crowd. .....

Casablanca, because I actually cared about the characters.
This. I had a hard time liking most of the characters in Citizen Kane, and although the visuals were top notch, the story wasn't.
Casablanca put me right into the place and time and there wasn't a false note in the star-crossed lovers story. That's hard to do without getting sappy or melodramatic.
I feel that if someone has to explain a movie to me, the movie didn't do a good job.
I couldn't even finish watching CK.
