The point isn't necessary that my opinion is the "right" one - the point is the hope that people might exercise some critical faculty.
What does it matter to you?
Sometimes I really enjoy complete cinematic fluff. Some of my favorite movies would never win any awards. I don't overthink the whys or the hows. I just like it. Shouldn't bother anyone.
Just goes to show how low the quality of movies has become.
OR that not everyone has the same tastes in movies. Its okay if you don't like a movie, but your opinion of it doesn't automatically mean its a low quality movie.
I expected most people would like it, but ask yourselves this:
Does it have a marvelous, distinct, memorable character, like Yul Brynner in The King and I? No.
Does it have a riveting plot, like Sweeney Todd? No.
Does it have dazzlingly funny or clever lyrics, like Company or Candide? No.
Does it have marvelously memorable tunes, like "I could have danced all night" or "Somewhere over the rainbow" or "Send in the clowns" or "People"? No.
Does it feature an unusual or exotic locale, like The King and I or South Pacific? No.
Does it have an enjoyable evocation of an era, like Gigi? No.
Does it touch on any worthwhile issues, like South Pacific? No.
Does it have anything that's really at stake, like Camelot? No.
Does it have anything genuinely moving, like West Side Story? No.
Does it have really sophisticated dancing, like an Astaire film? No.
Does it have any real show-stoppers scenes like all the ones in classic musicals? No.
As I said - bland and dull.
Nothing compares to "The Sound of Music". That is the only musical I can stomach.
Plenty of Oscar nominations today......
BUT Hollywood always loves movies about itself. Even Boogie Nights, which is about a very taboo topic in Hollywood, got an Oscar nomination or two

Double feature with "Rocky Horror Picture Show"
There are a number of films that sit at the edge between being a musical and a straight film. "Cabaret" framed the bulk of the song and dance within the Kit Kat club.
I don't understand why this film received so much attention.
Ryan Gosling's character annoyed me. But then again, I've never understood the infatuation with him in the first place. I had no issues with Emma Stone.

I completely agree. I just saw it five days ago, and I have already forgotten almost all of it. The plot could be summarized in one sentence. The only thing I found remotely interesting was the "What could have been" going through "Ryan's" mind. (I forget the name of his character, which also tells you something about the movie's forgettable quality.)
Such a disappointment because I am a big fan of GOOD movie musicals, from any decade. (But, still, after saying all this, at least it was relief from all the doom and gloom so prevalent in so many of today's movies.)
It was entertaining. I don't understand the deep heavy dissections,it was entertaining.i didn't expect it to shake my world, but it was fine for an afternoon with popcorn.
And for those speaking of the non"upbeat" ending, I have a different view.
They said they would love each other forever before she left for Paris, and the way they looked at each other final scene,I chose to take away they did wind up together.
Romantic side of me I guess.
