Just saw this and I thought it was EXCELLENT. Good story and not exactly what you would think from the previews, I always like that. Good chemistry between Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, she looked stunning as always. Some interesting special effects, but it's really about the two of them. I'm not that critical about movies, so I'm interested in hearing what others thought about it.
I've read some of his writings in "Discover" magazine. IIRC, he has some good stuff and I've agreed with about 80+% of what he has written, but like Jame Randi he also has a bit of that snide "claim of superior knowledge" when he doesn't have the faintest data to support it, which is something that can really tick me off. I'd love to watch him get chewed up by a few of the quantum physicists to take that edge off. I think he would be a lot more readable after that.
"Passengers" is so weak scientifically that a lot of people could pick it apart.
Without spoiling the movie, I find that one somewhat common plotline in sci-fi films is the malfunctioning or knife edged iris that closes or opens over an aperture or tunnel, creating the possibility of disaster. That has got to be an in-joke started by cinematographers who have lost shots or entire days of shooting due to some lens that malfunctioned.
How closely was it related to the Vincent Price classic with the same title?
Likely not at all, since The Last Man on Earth was based on Richard Matheson's classic novel, I Am Legend, which also influenced George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead.

I just got back from seeing it and I agree with you....it is far superior to the majority of other stuff coming out of Hollywood in these times. My theater was packed and there were a lot of annoying distractions around me, so I have to see it again. It's been a long, long, time since a movie has brought me back for a second show.
It was really good - I came close to tears a few times. And these days, I'm more likely to walk out of a theater in disgust than to be really touched by it.
It's 32% on Rotten Tomatoes - right about where many of my favorite movies are. And I am really critical of movies today. This one is a good one.

Great movie. Even the Omega Man with Charleston was good. Vincent was awesome in that movie though. I always loved the part where the ghoul breaks the window, and Vince takes the wine bottle off the table, gets an annoyed look and just tosses it toward the busted window. Great moment.
They should have made I am Legend exactly like the book. What a clever story the book was.
Ill go check it out but the premise and plot seem so ludicrous. If I woke up on a spaceship alone with JL there would only be one thing going on...
