I loved HIGHLANDER when I was a kid. I rewatched it as an adult. It's actually really bad. I mean really,
really bad. I mean, the main character is supposed to be a Scottish Highlander. So they hire a French actor who plays it with a French accent. His mentor is supposed to be a Spaniard. So they hire a Scottish actor who plays it with a Scottish accent. And the bad guy is an ancient Russian Kurgan, so they cast Clancy Brown, who basically just growled all his dialogue.
THE BREAKFAST CLUB. Loved it as a teen. Go back and watch it now with your brain turned on. It's not a
bad movie, I guess. But it is thoroughly mediocre. And it is truly bad in parts. The whole dance sequence is ridiculous --- and set to painfully bad music. But worst, these teens are so inauthentic. They don't come across as any teen I ever knew. These are what smartypants adults think teens are like.
UNCLE BUCK. Okay, Candy is as charming as ever. There are some really funny and moving scenes. But go back and watch this. It is directed with all the flair of an after-school special. It looks
really cheap.
TOP GUN. To be honest, I never really liked this movie. But all my friends did. For a few years, everyone I knew thought TOP GUN was the greatest movie ever. Some of those same people now will laugh at it with me.
AMERICAN BEAUTY. This is a brilliantly
directed movie. But the story? C'mon. Every character is a straw man. It's preachy. And knowing what we know now about Kevin Spacey, it has a whole new layer of creepy.
