Rented two movies during the President’s Day weekend—Tar and The Fabelmans. I loved Cate Blanchett in Tar, and the story was very interesting as well. Excellent character study. Cate Blanchett is an extremely talented actress with such a wide range. Such a treasure to motion pictures.
As much as I like Steven Spielberg, I got the feeling he should have given The Fabelmans to another director. I really think he was too close to the source material. I had previously watched an American Masters documentary on Spielberg so I knew something about his childhood, and that really filled in more of the backstory, I think, than the movie.
Several months ago we saw we could watch Blonde and Elvis for free, but gave up on both about 30 minutes or so. Blonde was just boring and Elvis was so over the top (which is typical of a Baz Luhrmann directed movie). We also rented Top Gun: Maverick around the same time and felt cheated that we didn’t see it in a movie theater. It seemed rather ordinary on the small screen.
With that, I’ve either sampled or entirely watched half of the Oscar nominated movies. I am only wowed by Tar. Hopefully I can watch a few more before The Oscars next month. Really want to see what the hype is all about for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
“Acts of Vengeance” on HBO Max
Antonio Banderas, Paz Vega, Karl Urban, Robert Forester
Banderas’s wife and daughter are murdered after he fails to show up at his daughter’s talent show
He is defense attorney who spends all his time on his law practice
He takes a vow of silence and trains to take vengeance on the killers after reading Marcus Aurelias’s “Meditations”
This script is pretty clueless because the clues about who did it are right in front of him if he knew how to Google
But Banderas looks pretty fit for a man his age
Very trite and shopworn premise though
What the heck?? How have I not heard of this? Kevin James? And Joel McHale?? lol
Added to our queue, thanks.
