I have been on a long Hollywood losing streak for post-1990 movies, mostly mediocre to just bad.

I recently saw two movies I liked very much.

Heaven Must Wait, 2001

It took a while to build but was watchable and worthwhile and satisfying. It didn't seem like a US movie. I am not sure if it was Hollywood or Great Britain. Very enjoyable family film. I found it on my Netflix DVD list. It is not even listed on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes, so I have no clue how anybody can watch this if you don't get DVDs from Netflix? So this is kind of a worthless recommendation if it is so obscure you can't find it.

Anyway, I really liked it -- the first in a while.

The Cat's Meow, 2001

The story isn't one worth telling, but the value in art is not what is done but how it is done. The "Last Supper" is just 13 guys at a dinner table. The "Mona Lisa" is a woman in a chair wearing a smile."

Great cast and cast chemistry. Well written and well paced. Really comes together in the end. The weakness is that they don't do a good job really helping unfamiliar people to know who all of the characters are. The young wouldn't know William Randolph Hearst or Charlie Chaplin anymore, and the rest of the characters were only important to 1920s Hollywood.

They should have given us a little pocket biography on each character boarding the boat, instead of just a name and job description. You need more. I had to go back after the movie and do a little research on the characters, then it all made sense but not having this beforehand didn't hurt the movie in the least. It was still easy to follow and understand.

This is not a period piece, if you are looking for that. This is just a well done movie that satisfies.

Oh, that movie was a 10!......but then again, it helps if one has actually been there.

That is, 20-25 years ago in a writing role playing group, I played a powerful telepath whose mind had been artificially reconstructed to enable her to do all she did, like align herself with a computer and read it that way (ie, Scanners). She could influence electromagnetic waves.....like the Cherons in Star Trek, Bele & Lokai, who while not mentioned, were obviously evolved from electric rays. She was essentially immortal where her reproductive capabilities had been reoriented toward youth (sort of like Crystal Singer) although I never said exactly how that was done. Was someone writing down what I wrote to use it for later? Shrug, it wasn't something I worried about then because I was writing for play and the concepts I used had been the ideas of others.

But to watch a movie that is so closely, if quite unintentional and just a coincidence, you.......WHAT A RUSH!

I found the second Midway DVD in the bargain bin. I was pleasantly surprised as it was part of my personal Memorial Day observance.

The Little Mermaid in 3D. It was adorable and full of color and life. I really enjoyed it. Halle Bailey has one heck of a set of lungs on her and the chemistry between she and Jonathan Hauer King is on point.
