I remember seeing a John Wayne movie with my folks in June of 1976. My mother for some reason was laughing hysterically during the film while i dozed off in the back seat. It featured what looked like a bunch of rednecks hanging out in a bar shooting darts or something and there was a character who had some kind of protrusion coming out of his cheek(chewing tobacco maybe?). Maybe it wasn't even a John Wayne movie but something similar, but i remember mom laughing hysterically at the scenes. Any idea?
I think you may be thinking of the movie Brannigan which came out in 1975 and was one of Wayne's last movies. He plays a cop sent to London to extradite a gangster back to the US. It does have some funny scenes. Brannigan (1975)
If this was at a drive in, the only film he made in 76 was The Shootist, but as most drive ins of the time some recent year's films would have been still making the rounds. The three films previous to The Shootist were Brannigan 1975, Rooster Cogburn 1975 and McQ 1974-personally having seen all of these, it sounds like McQ or Brannigan was the film you saw.
I'll have to investigate those when i get a chance.
