LOL...actually it wasn't until 1988 I found an ear for hard rock. The first HR CD I purchased was Whitesnake's self-titled 1987 release, followed a short while later by Hysteria.
It wasn't the first I owned (worked in radio in the 80's, lots of freebies) but the first I actually spent money on was Phaedra from Tangerine Dream. Had the original vinyl issue, the Japanese vinyl issue, the German vinyl issue and I think a UK vinyl snuck in at some point. No longer have any of the vinyls but still have the cd.
Thursday, I was something like you. When I made the leap to CDs in the early 90s I figured I should have more than just one to start and picked up 4 Moody Blues LPs from the late 60s. In Search of the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children and A Question of Balance. I already had each one on vinyl.
I also stocked up heavily on Led Zeppelin in my first year of having access to a cd player. The Metallica album is long gone from my life, but I still listen to the Zeppelin albums. Never did get Physical Graffiti, but I married someone who owns it, so it was kind of moot.
We bought our first cd player in 1989, and along with it, 4 cds. U2 - The Joshua Tree, Peter Gabriel - So, Steve Winwood - Chronicles, and I can never remember what that fourth one was... it might have been a Midnight Oil cd. Regardless, the 4 cds that we purchased were albums that we already owned on either vinyl or cassette.
