I found this linked thread in the "similar threads" sidebar, and the points made in it make for better reading than anything in this one.

This decade has been pretty good for those who aren't stuck on a singular way of creating music.

Try again.
Please, tell me who you think the best songwriters of the past 100 years are, I'd looooove to hear this.

My taste in music has been developed from listening to countless hours of music my whole life, but it's just a hobby for me. I've never claimed otherwise. For the past few years, I'd say I've listened to or skimmed through at least a few thousand new, fresh-off-the-press songs, giving them all a chance with no preconceptions. This makes me confident in my taste, which seems to upset you.

With that said, you're never going to catch me caring about the musical masturbation of an artist (technical ability) just because they're good at it, even if the music is completely uninteresting. I have already posted hundreds of songs that I have enjoyed for one reason or another on this site, which is more of a contribution to this forum than the whimsical musings of...westboundrambler.

I think we're agreeing more than disagreeing, I also hate musical masturbation ala Steve Vai or Joe Satriani for example, and I mentioned Phish goes off on tangents that are annoying as well. The Grateful Dead occasionally did this but I can excuse it when a concert is 5% musical masturbation and 95% impeccable songs and fresh interpretation. It's all about the songs, I agree, I don't want to hear endless pointless jamming, but the Dead RARELY did that.
