Nastasya Samburskaya

Cocaine.
Text: A. Vertinsky, 1916
Translation:
Quote:
What are you crying about, my pathetic, abandoned, and silly Miss,
Crucified by cocaine on a drizzling Moscow boulevard?
Your delicate skinny neck is barely wrapped in an old neckpiece.
Just like you, it’s worn-out, wet, amusing, and a discard.

You’ve been poisoned already with the city streets’ awful rain.
And I know that you, screaming, could jump into an insanity cloud.
In the end, when you die, you will lay on this bench, gone in vain,
And your purplish dead body, darkness will wrap in a shroud…

So, don’t cry, it’s not worth it, my lonely, pathetic, and lovely Miss,
Crucified by cocaine on a drizzling Moscow boulevard.
Better wrap your neck tighter, like with a rope, with your old neckpiece
And proceed somewhere else, where nobody will ask, who you are.

Default вилы - недоля

I like this album a lot. Is this actually Russian? I see it described that way, but there's very little about it in English, so I am not sure if it's actually Russian, or just something on a Russian label. When I first heard it, I thought it might be Bulgarian.

They are from Moscow. But the name of the band is from the mythology of southern Slavs.

The musical basis of the art project "Vily" is ritual folk songs, wedding, calendar, round dance, lullabies, lyrical. Live polyphony plus electronic music and bright lighting design give rise to the hypnotic effect of modern folk action.

Project manager Inna Zhelannaya. "Vily" is a new development in her work, she no longer sings, but vocalists of a very high level (two of them are graduates of The Gnessin State Musical College, this is one of the best vocal schools in Russia).

Song fragments:

Fragments of the recording of the album:

But "Vily" is not only music, it is also theater:

Maksim, looks interesting. I noticed the other day that there were some very theatrical-looking performance videos under their name on youtube. The music works for me on its own, however. It helps that they work with a broad sonic palette. (Well, that comes across even in the collages of clips you posted, actually.) The vocalists are obviously high-level, so I am not surprised they are conservatory trained.

Yes, it's a very interesting project, I haven't heard them before. Thank's!

Thanks for providing background, because copying and pasting the band and album name in Russian into search engines wasn't bringing much up in English. I have been checking out some of Inna Zhelannaya's earlier recordings, solo and otherwise, and I like some of what I am hearing, although I don't like one of the male vocalists she has worked with. Still a lot to dig through.

Judging by the number of streams on Spotify, they are not well-known at this point. And the last couple times I looked, their handful of listeners were mostly in Germany or the US.

Shock rock. In the vein of Marilyn Manson. This one was not that interesting to me. The drummer is the trees / kiss of death singer transformation was a powerful sequence but that was about it.
