Glad to see a bevy of talented/intelligent drummers and drum fans out there.
I don't get into the "best of all time" thing, but I would like to mention several that have influenced me and/or I have admired over the years I have played as an amateur (1980-now):
Louis Bellson Max Roach Gene Krupa Buddy Rich Art Blakey Tony Williams Jack DeJohnette
Ginger Baker
John Bonham Butch Trucks Jaimoe Johanson
Danny Seraphine (who was SCREWED royally by Chicago in 1990). Bill Bruford Phil Collins Carl Palmer
Alan White
Phil Ehart (Kansas, possibly the most underrated drummer of the last 50 years)
Neil Peart Jeff Porcaro Steve Gadd Chester Thompson
Tony Thompson
Dennis Chambers
Alex Van Halen
Nicko McBrain
Lars Ulrich
Mike Mangini
Keith Carlock
Mike Portnoy
Carter Beauford
Travis Barker
Joey Jordinson
Sorry, no Keith Moon - energetic but too sloppy for my tastes, especially after Quadrophenia.
Finally someone mentions Steve Gadd??????? He should have shown up on the first page. I highlighted the ones I think are worth consideration as greats, and will add the following:
Roy Haynes
Elvin Jones
Billy Cobham
Philly Joe Jones
Baby Dodds
Alan Dawson
Brian Blade
Harvey Mason
Andrew Cyrille
Steve Jordan
Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson
Lenny White
Leon Parker
Enrique Pla
Paco Sery
Omar Hakim
Jeff "Tain" Watts
Larrie Londin
Pistol Allen
Uriel Jones
Modern days - Max Weinberg
Old rocker - Ginger Baker
Older 'n that - Sandy Nelson (I learned to play drums from his albums first)
Sandy Nelson also had a fair amount of 45's on the charts in his day, and two that are the most notable are "Teen Beat" and "Let There be Drums". He recorded mainly for Imperial Records and Liberty Records. Good call Modern Days!
Ok, this guy has mad game but that was one of the most annoying solos. I was into it for the first minute or two, but geez. We get it Derek, you have fast feet. Show us something with some soul. You don't get as good as this guy is without having the other chops. I'd like to hear some other stuff from him other than that buzz-saw double bass. It's cool and has it's place but everything in moderation, as they say.
Wow. Sandy Nelson! I still have an album of his. He played in a sort of Cozy Cole style. I also saw his name listed many years ago on one of the NFL Films productions...he was playing snare drum and sounded really good.
