saucywench: I wouldn't place Sugar Sugar that high. I like it in spite of myself, but it was the prototypical bubblegum teenybopper song. It was by a studio 'group' who made a huge pile of money off it. Completely commercial, although well done (I like the way it develops as a fugue!).
I always liked The Hollies! They had great harmony and very good material.
I will have to leave this on my favorite songs of the 60s list. I would have been eight or nine when this song was popular. Loved bubblegum music. Liked the song. Had the record. Wore it out. I'm not still playing it though, except here. YouTube - Sugar Sugar by The Archies
I'd like to hear the Wilson Pickett cover of Sugar, Sugar. Couldn't find it. The Mike Nesmith story was funny. Reminds me of when Quiet Riot didn't want to cover *** On Feel the Noise by Slade. Interesting trivia with that song also. Kevin said he sang it badly on purpose. That song helped make Mental Health number one. And Styx, didn't want to record Babe. They all hated it. Turned out to be one of their biggest hits. Had plenty of bubblegum in my record case in the 60s. Had a lot of Beatles and Stones, too. And, I was a big fan of this man. Had a lot of his records. My mom had the ones I didn't. The mellower ones.
I like all these '60s songs. All number ones from '69, the same year Sugar, Sugar spent four weeks at number one. The Archie's song bumped this one off the top... YouTube - honky tonk women edited by mike

I couldn't find anything from the Big Huge but this is a classic Hippy Dippy / Spooky Kooky also.
One of my favorite songs ever.
