Her voice sounds a bit "heavier" on this song - which is fine with me, and the style seems a bit different than her previous work (a change which is needed, I think.)

I think she's doing that for effect. The whole "soldier" thing....the military drum beat....

If you mean in general, she's a multi-platinum, grammy awarding winning artist. And that started with her first album Diamond Life. Her songs were in heavy rotation back then, and she also started during the new age of music videos. So her videos were always on all the music video shows back then. There's a wiki page about her that's very good...
