Goldfrapp? Really? I prefer Santogold.
As, for the Cruxshadows,
I thought you were looking for more recent stuff...."Sophia" was #1 back in 2006 or so, wasn't it?
Some people listen to Bach, Handel, Musica Antiqua from ancient Egypt and Babylonia...so perhaps 2006 would seem 'modern'?
For 'folk' type stuff I'd say Bonnie Prince Billy, Espers, James Blackshaw, Devendra Banhart ...
...but his last album left me dry...so...' cautious optimism '.
Wow, thanks Victorian. I'm really digging that Goldfrapp song as well. Now I know what I'm getting for new music day (tuesdays for me). Lots of good new music on here...keep it going all!
Thanks. Ohh, and if you are going to get Goldfrapp, keep in mind that their last album "Seventh Tree", which had caravan girl, was more of a chill out album, while most of their stuff is more dance oriented...NOT THAT THEIR'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
Lady Gaga stold their act and bastardized their sound! (while I admit this song is obivously inspired by Donna Summer's "I Feel Love")

They sound alot like Black Tape for a Blue Girl.
Dude, four years ago is not exactly "ancient history". Not to mention that about a month ago they just had another number 1 dance song, "Quicksilver". They also sound nothing like black tape for a blue girl. They are not ambient enough and have to fast a tempo. They might be said to sound like Souxie and the Banshees a little or, more likely, like Project Pitchfork, but they are nothing like black tape for a blue girl.

Wow, yikes. Lighten up. So no one else around here is allowed to have an opinion? Yikes.
I never declared 2006 to be ancient history.
My take on your OP was that you were looking for more recent acts (as in timely, as in this year or last) my mistake. Sheesh.
I suppose I could explain why I think they sound like Black Tape for a Blue Girl but apparently you don't think anyone else is allowed to have an opinion here.
And by the way, feel free to call me 'dude', since i do live in Ca. now, but just for the record. I have a uterus.
Bands that give me hope: Jack White--he takes chances, tries to grow. I don't always like everything he does, but one thing he does not do is play it safe and formulaic. With the Dead Weather, "Hang You from the Heavens" from July 2009 was superb.
I like the Fleet Foxes a lot--hope they come out with some new stuff because it's been awhile now--a year or so.
I like the melodies and riffs of Ratatat. Check out Mirando (2008) and Wildcat (2006).
Lately I have been enamored of the Avett Brothers. They do not exactly have a polished, layered sound but without a doubt their songs are solid; I bet they are awesome live.
Released in 2009: I've been enjoying the pretty, tinkly indie of Freelance Whales.
But what knocked me out this weekend is this from a band called Sleigh Bells:
(Warning: Not all of their stuff is discordant-fuzzy-in-your-face-wall-of-sound but this is--it is frickin' loud, distorted and may burst your ear drums.)
Sorry about the back to back 2Goldens! My mistake, I forgot!
And I always purchase every CD made by Trent Reznor (NIN) and Matt Johnson (The The) without hearing a note. They are my standard "go to" guys that I adore....and they just keep writing and writing.
