Okay, we all know that overwhelming majority of the music out their on the radio and on the hit list is pure, infiltered slime!...so, what about the minority? As in music that while actually being good somehow managed to get to the something resembling a large following in America and managed to exist in a landscape of the cookie-cutter Beyonces, Fall Out Boys and all that hip-hop and (c)rap.
I would say for me bands that give me hope are TV on the Radio. They are inventive as hell and actually have real musical talent and rhythm:
I would also say "Fleet Foxes"...granted, they only made it to the top thirty (telling about the state of music today) but man, this kind of music is still around? I mean, no thongs, no glitter, no drum machine, no lyrics about women and booze and how great the "singer" is (none of that "YO! G! WORD IS BOND! I BE MAKIN' THAT MONEY LIKE IT AIN'T NOTHIN' WRONG!") just pure folk rock.
Wow, beautiful folk rock in the year 2009...will wonders never cease?
Finally, I would add one of the best, most talented and most original bands of the last decade, the Dresden Dolls to that list. I want to marry Amanda Palmer...but it looks like Neil Gaiman, one of my favorite authors, is beating me to the punch. This band is more inventive with a drum, a piano and a voice than Lady Gaga is with a massive production company and all kinds of help. They are amazing and can do so much with so little...and to think, they are that good, and most younger people I ask about them have actually heard of them! Incredible.
Location: miami, fla. enjoying the relative cool, for now ;)

But other than that, I agree TV On the Radio and Fleet Foxes are awesome. My fave songs by them are Dirtywhirl and Blue Ridge Mountains, respectively.
if you think your statement through you might understand why I find it to be myopic. while I agree that there is much about POPULAR music I personally don't care for there are a lot of folks who disagree with us.
as an example here's a pop music piece which is brilliant as well as possibly one of the best love songs ever written.
g'head I dare you label this as "crap"
