I am almost finished my bachelors degree. My future hubby is in law school. Currently, we are living in New England and contemplating a move to North or South Carolina in a couple years to plant our roots, but with the economy being the way it is, I'm worried employment will be difficult to find, especially for an entry level attorney and I am planning to start my own business. I suppose I'm looking for reassurance or warnings now lol

Horry County unemployment currently stands at 13%. IMO, you'd be better off looking at areas like Columbia, Wilmington NC, or Charleston. It seems to me that there are many more potential opportunities any any of those three cities than there ever will be in this area.. at least until we have direct Interstate access via I-73.

Do your homework, visit the areas which you are considering moving to.. several times. Tale your time and make an informed decision so that you don't have immediate regrets once you've made your move.

My business partner already lives in Wilmington. Ideally, we'd both like to end up in the Myrtle Beach area. Hence, moving from New England to SC... we thought it may be wiser for us to just go straight to MB.

This area is tough and if you scroll through other threads in this forum you will see that being said many times over. I don't know much about starting an attorney business but maybe if you specialize in real estate you can get a job here. It is a retirement, vacation and popular relocation area so I'm guessing the real estate attornies aren't doing too bad but it's something you would have to research. I agree with rrufast about looking in those other areas if that's an option. It's pretty tough around here to make a living.

Bad idea. Listen to the advice rapture and rrufast gave, they are very accurate. You won't make much of a living here, it's a tourist area. Charleston is a wonderful city, but like every area, it has it's ups and downs. Personally, I would check out that area and the immediate surrounding ones.

I have been looking into Charleston and the Wilmington, NC area. Thank you for your advice. It is much appreciated. We are considering a transfer a bit earlier now (next summer after his 2nd year of law school is completed vs waiting until he graduates) thinking it may be best to transfer to a SC or NC law school for the last year to get a feel for the areas in which we may want to settle down and where would be best to open our business.

Your fiance might do well to specialize in elder law - estate planning, avoiding probate, powers of attorney, living wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, and all that sort of thing - since the MB area is also a large retirement area. I would imagine there are people wanting to protect their assets for future generations who would welcome advice and guidance.
