We love the Pawleys area and are highly considering as our retirement location. As a golfer I have been to the area many times and know with all the marsh and small lakes everywhere that there is a large snake population. My wife is NOT a fan as, much for her as we have dogs that need outdoor time. Can homeowners give their experience on how many times they have encounters? Right now looking at Heritage, Allston, litchfield. Etc. thanks in advance.
I know this may not be helpful, but I live right on a twenty acre lake in Murrells Inlet. Literally yards to my dock. I’ve seen a couple of gators but no snakes. I hate them too so I’d remember.
I love snakes and always hope to see them on my walks around Murrells Inlet. I think it is sad that I see very few.......
It’s also a marker of the area’s environmental health. The area in general, and Pawleys in particular, has been overbuilt, clear-cut, filled-in and polluted to the point that few native species remain. Alligators seem to be a rare exception. They apparently have the ability to adapt to whatever environmental damage humans may do.

My non-scientific observations of nature in the 9 years I have been visiting Murrells Inlet: alligators yes, but fewer sightings each year. Snakes sightings becoming rarer. Honey bees almost none. Fewer and fewer toads and frogs. Small lizards pretty much the same each year. The one reptile that seems to continue to thrive are the turtles. Always lots of turtles.....
Hmmm good point PD , something I have never thought of. I have visited Pawleys 20-30 times in the last 10 years and mostly it’s to play golf, grab a beer or quick meal before heading back to NMB. I still have seen quite a few snakes and plenty of the gators on the courses. Could be that’s one of their last havens than. Thanks all for the info.
In my 45 years of growing up and living in Myrtle Beach/Murrells Inlet, I don't remember ever seeing a snake. Not that i ever looked but I was in the Golf business.
