There's a lot of salt in the air near oceans, therefor cars tend to rust more near the oceans. Besides that it's hot and humid most of the year and moisture is another factor in why cars rust quicker. Same with salted roads up north, the worst damage I've seen on cars are ones from Toronto/Quebec and most of Canada where they salt the roads quite often, if you don't undercoat your vehicle with a tough bedliner type material, they will rust to the point of large holes in just a couple of years.

If you're worried about rust, it's important to take care of any scratches and dents. If paint and coating has been scratched away, the exposed metal will rust from the constant humidity that WiseMan mentioned. If you live close to the coast, the same applies to household stuff - grills, saw blades, etc.

It also depends a lot upon what you call "there" and how you use your vehicle. Many roads immediately along the coast are subject to coastal flooding during periods of unusually high tides. If you end up driving thru those very often, even the best of undercoatings are no match. I've pretty well rusted out the tailgate of my truck from hauling kayaks, beach gear, etc. All-in-all, it's been a good trade-off.

Thanks for the info. Would that apply also to areas that are away from the beach, such as Little River or is it the whole general area?

Unless you're hauling stuff with saltwater like PawleysDude mentioned, you're not going to get the complete rust through like you do in the north with the salt on the roads. You just don't want to let scratches/exposed metal to go unattended.

Salt and Brine treated roads are much tougher on the undersides of cars than the salt air in the MB area.
Just wash the car.

Len

I agree. We've never had a rust problem on any of our cars. We have had to replace some metal outdoor furniture that has gotten rusty. At the same time, we also have some metal outdoor furniture that has no rust at all - not sure why some got rusty and other things didn't.
