I've only been there once. Bucksport is located at about the midway point of the 37 mile drive between Georgetown and Conway on Hwy. 701. It is the only sign of civilization all along this drive. It is close to/situated on the Waccamaw river across from the Surfside Beach area, but there are no bridges which connect the two. So you are looking at living out in the boondocks with a 15-20 mile drive to either town for shopping, amenities. I should mention that the planned extension of the Carolina Bays parkway (Route 31) will eventually span the river in this area, but is not scheduled to be completed until sometime in 2014 (which in SC means some time around 2020). Maybe this is your cup of tea. Good luck!

Teddy - are you sure you're not thinking about the proposed Southern Evacuation Lifeline? I thought the Hwy 31 expansion just runs down to Hwy 707, somewhere around Holmestown Rd. Supposedly, 707 will be expanded to 4-lane from there down to Hwy 17 in Murrells Inlet.

We may see SELL eventually built to cross the river but I envision lots of lengthy environmental lawsuits before that happens.

I only have one question for you.... Have you ever been to,or driven thru, Bucksport? If not, you certainly should. I think a lot of your questions would be answered by simply driving in the area.

PS- I'm not trying to be smart in my answer.. just honest and sincere...

In other words, Bucksport is a predominantly black community. So you should expect it to be a relatively poor area with cheap housing, thus thats why there is no bridge there yet (money talks).

I have not been there in years, but this is an accurate description of the place last time I saw it. The only other feature, if it is still there, is there is a big marina on the waterway so there is a lot of boating traffic.
