Naples, The Good, Bad and Ugly? (Miami, Tampa: house, school, to live)

I lived in Naples for a little over a year, did not care for it at all. I see no glamorous thing about living there, it's no better than anywhere else in FL. Rich people, poor people, snobs galore... No better than anywhere else. Sarasota blows Naples away.

at least with the Hamptons you can go 50 miles and be in a REAL city and get anything you want, any time of the day or night.

I grew up in Manhattan. Naples? ROFL Other than BEACHES, which you can get on LI, Naples doesn't even come close.

Exactly! Like I said, a "little upscale town". Is there a REAL city anywhere in Florida though? I guess Jacksonville would be the closet thing. Although, Orlando's downtown area does feel like a real city. Until you leave that area that is. P.S. L.I. doesn't have 80 Jan highs though! LOL

why would you care fo 80 in January? A lot of people don't, you know. As many have said on another forum, "A week or two is about all I can take of Florida weather." One even called it Jurastic Park.

Settle down there Tan, it was a joke! Florida's winter whether I would say is MORE desirable than what we have up north during the winters (snow birder's). I personally think NYC's weather SUCKS! It's so hot hot and humid during the summer here, it almost feels like fl.

anywhere like the humidity in Naples. I lived in Gainesville for a while. Nothing compared to Naples. I never knew 70 degrees could be as HUMID as all hell. Yeah, NYC can get very hot sometimes, and I grew up there before AC, but it's nowhere near the humidity levels as here. And it certainly isn't 12 years out of the year.

I think all the SOUTH"S weather sucks. Alot of people stay indoors alot during the summer. Just like they would a winter up north! Except for the winters up north, you get breaks in the action, unlike the southern summers.

Well, yes, there's not a "real" city in Fl. Unless Miami and Lauderdale count, I guess. But who cares? Most big cities are crowded crime fests. I didn't care much for Tampa when I worked at GTE. And it's a small, relatively safe city.

I guess I'm different from a lot of folks in these forums. Urban to me is a bad word. Rural may be a bit much... but somewhere in between for sure. You want space between you and your neighbors, and minimal city style aggravations IMHO. But too each his own. I've seen "urban" heavily defended in these forums.

I'm afraid I'd rather live in a big mansion in Hawaii than in a any of the big cities any day, but that's just my ideal. Getting back to reality though, ain't likely to happen. LOL!

If you're looking to be in the Naples area but want to have a bit of elbow room then I'd suggest looking in Golden Gate estates. When I lived in Naples many of my friends lived in the estates. Most of the lots are over 1 acre. While the city is rather expensive, the estates is more affordable. The average age in the estates is much lower so it will not (at least it didn't) have a large retirement presence. Many of the people I know in the estates have businesses or work in Naples and the traffic in to Naples can be annoying, but you are still looking at under 20 minutes.
