We are African American. Is this a diverse area? In Pennsylvania there is a cut off as to when a child must turn 5 before going to kindergarden. My son does not meet that deadline here as his birthday is in late October. Are there similar rules in TN? If so are there good childcare centers nearby or what are the school districts like. Does anyone know if I should consider another neighborhood? Any information will be helpful.
I relocated to Nashville from NJ a year ago (next Friday). I am a single black woman with a young daughter. I have not experienced any problems with racism (no more than typical in NJ). I live in South Nashville in a pretty quiet area. Diverse with people of all kinds, black, white, mexican, kurdish...I attend a very diverse church in Franklin if you're looking for a church I'll send you the name of it.

I think the area you're moving to is diverse as well and very cultural. I think of it more for single living. You may find that the condos are not kid-friendly. I'm not sure. But the school system is good in that area. Your son does not make the cut off for kindergarten so he'll have to go to daycare, which you could find at a church or local daycare. Make sure to pick up a copy of Nashville Parent magazine. You can get it from the YMCA. Here's a link to the Nashville public schools MNPS Home Page.

I take my daughter to the YMCA for fun--swimming and sports. There are a ton of activities for you to enjoy with your son. Wave Country, Nashville Shores, Adventure Science Center, museums, the Frist center, Centennial Park has events as well. There are outdoor movies around town on certain nights. The Nashville Parent magazine has a lot of information.

You are also close to sports arenas and fields. There are wonderful parks in the area.

Vanderbilt has a summer program for kids called Camp Vandy and I believe they have a program for during the school year.

Hope this helps. I know what it's like to be in a new town and trying to learn what's going on. Good luck!
