I might be wrong, but isn't that a middle school on Mcgavock Pike?

I don't have any affiliation with the school, but surely there has to be some good things going on at Antioch High. All we hear about on the forums and the various Nashville media outlets are the problems there. With the number of students that attend, I would assume it would have its share of problems.

I assume they have AP and Honors programs there, just like other metro schools. I'm sure those kids go on to do good things, just like many of their peers who aren’t in those programs.

Antioch High seems to have its reputation ruined by some kids who are outside of the norm. I don't think the average student there is out tagging people's homes and dealing drugs.

Sure, your kid might be surrounded by different influences at Antioch than if he/she went to Hillwood, but they aren't doomed by attending either.

I hate to stereotype, but I'm sure the students in the Honors and AP program aren’t surrounded by the riff-raff that everyone thinks overwhelms the school. The kids in those programs might have an entirely different experience than the other students.

Then again, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about?

Anyone else know anything about the original question -- that little peninsula that sticks out into PP Lake? Also: if you live close to the River or one of the lakes, do you have to buy flood insurance?

thanks.

Depends on whether the property is located in a flood plain, and whether you have a mortgage.

They publish maps showing the flood plain for all areas. A mortgage company will generally require the owner of property within the flood plain to have flood insurance. If you own the property outright, it's up to you.

Here's a couple of problems to look out for. Because of the topography of the area, sometimes part of a property will be in a flood plain, but where the house is located is not . . . it can turn into a mess as you argue that you don't need flood insurance and the mortgage company insists you do. Also, they revise those maps from time to time. You could suddenly find that your property is now in a flood plain when it wasn't before.

Here's my suggestion. If the house you're thinking about buying is in a flood plain, forget it. There's lots of houses and life is tough enough anyway without having to wonder if your house is going to float down the Cumberland the next time we have heavy rains.

Since no one is answering your question on the Peninsula sticking out into Percy Priest Lake let me try again. I know the area well. I have a boat on Percy Priest Lake and “PARKED” on the islands off the Anderson Rd. Recreation area many times.

You may call it Antioch or Nashville it is the same place. Looks like the Zip changes from Smith Spring Rd.

Anderson Rd Antioch Map:
Move the map down to see the Peninsula.
Antioch (http://tinyurl.com/2nslg7 - broken link)

Anderson Rd Nashville Map:
Nashville (http://tinyurl.com/2mrx2c - broken link)

Anderson Rd has a Public use area along the lake with a 1 mile fitness trail, picnic area, campground and parking. No houses are on the lake anywhere some are close but no private property touches the lake. It is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Here is more info on Percy Priest Lake:
Persy Priest Lake

As far as the Flood insurance goes check it out to be sure. I live on the east side of the Lake. We do not need flood insurance because there is no way for Percy Priest Lake to come up since the dam is lower than us so Hermitage and Nashville down from the dam would flood before we do.

The easiest way to find out if it's "antioch" is if it is zoned to Antioch High. I don't think anyone said this, but I could be wrong. That area is decent. I'm a pastor at a church off of Hobson Pike and some of the members live in that part of town and have never complained.

Thanks, TNkudzu!
Do you know if people are allowed onto that Army Corps of Engineers land or is it off limits, fenced, etc. It just looks like prime dog-walking territory.

It is public land no fences. There are trails etc. Some of it is inaccessible because of heavy brush and timber but there are roads and trails. Good place to walk your dog.

Percy Priest Lake is a nice clean lake. The water level is controlled by the dam. They start to lower the level in November but by March it is full again.
