Hello everyone,

Hubby and I are in the midst of planning a vacation this year.

We'll be traveling at the end of September, and instead of doing the usual Disney thing, we've decided to try something a little different and explore Nashville. As it's our first time planning something like this...any advice on the following would be appreciated!

1) Places to Stay (preferably under $100 / night)

2) What to see and do (on or off the beaten path)

3) Where to eat!

Thanks in advance! ~K

Will you have a car? What are your interests (nature, history, culture/museums, music, etc)?

We are kind of eclectic people...we both love music of all kinds, and definitely enjoy food. Sight Seeing is always fun in new places so we were wondering what was popular (and worth seeing) I'm know I'm kinda vague, but we are open for an adventure...and yes, we will have a car.

There is a lot of history in the area. Some interesting museums one of which has a botanical garden, a small zoo, and a lot of music venues (for which I'd check the Nashville Scene: Nashville Scene for the dates you are visiting - also check for restaurants as they have a dining section that generally features eclectic places.

You're going to have a great time, I know I did in Nashville. Will it be you and your husband or do you also have kid(s) with you? You'll definitely need a car to get around Nashville so keep that in mind.

In terms of places to stay, there are some hotel options, but I used www.airbnb.com to book a place to stay. I was able to get a much better rate than at a hotel. I'm also not a huge fan of hotels, I much prefer the homey feeling of my own house/apartment.

You may want to check out the Belle Meade Plantation, Percy Warner Park, Cheekwood Botanical Garden, the Parthenon. If you're into country music you may want to see the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry.

Food... my favorite part of any trip. I've got a diverse pallet. I love a good steak, but I also eat vegetarian several days a week so I'm pretty open to various types of food. You must have hot chicken while you're in Nashville--consider Prince's Hot Chicken Shack.

We really wanted breakfast at The Pancake Pantry one morning, but the line was out the door, around the corner and up the street. I've heard great things.

Go take a seat at Monells for some yummy southern soul food.

In terms of a nicer sit-down type of meal you've got:
Margot Cafe and Wine Bar: we went here the night we arrived in Nashville, after completing the drive down from New York and we both really enjoyed our meals. It was a great way to start out trip.
The Catbird Seat: you will want to book a table about one month in advance if you plan to go.
Watermark: Another really great place to eat.

Nashville's food scene has been receiving some serious recognition recently. The Times has a great article, here. Southern Living also touts the food scene, here.

Are you a Yelper? I love seeking out new places on Yelp, you may want to do the same before you head down to Nashville.

Are you looking for anything in terms of night life?

My friends joke that I'm very OCD because of how much planning I put into things. If you're interested, I can share the Nashville destination map I made while planning my trip. Just shoot me your email and I'll invite you as a collaborator so you can see the destinations I marked as noteworthy.

OCD is wonderful...and I definitely do not mind! Can't wait to go...I am a semi-active person who trains the best she can and likes to do fun races. Part of why we decided to vacation here is because I will be taking part in the Zombie Run at the end of September! So excited!

You've received some great suggestions. As far as historical things to see, I'd like to add The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson:

President Andrew Jackson's Home - Nashville, Tennessee

RJS5689 definitely covered the food options very well. He pretty much named all the food places I would've recommended. I'll also throw in the Loveless Café way out on Hwy 100 on the way out of town towards Memphis. Best biscuits I have ever had. Ever. It's also famous for its country ham, fried chicken, pork chops, and other very fattening and very tasty Southern treats.

Loveless Cafe

The good people at the Loveless just got back from serving a Valentine's Day dinner in the prestigious James Beard House in Greenwich Village. It's probably the only time in my life I wished that I was in Greenwich Village for Valentine's Day:

If you are going to stay at a hotel, and if you want to stay somewhere that just screams "Nashville" then try the massive Opryland Hotel which is now part of the Marriott chain:

Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center: Vacation Resorts in Nashville

The Opryland Hotel, complete with indoor gardens, waterfalls, and even an indoor river, is what an over-the-top Vegas hotel would be like if the over-the-top Vegas hotel were run by wholesome country music people and didn't have gaudy gambling halls. And the Opryland Hotel actually is the largest non-casino hotel in the country.

That is hilarious, and the best description of the Opryland Hotel I have ever read. +1

Glad to have found this thread and for everyone's contributions. If anyone else wants to add, I'm headed down there in two weeks and appreciate it.

I am 30, an Americana buff from Michigan, living in Virginia. I love nature and "sense of place". I like off the wall and spontaneous trips, I guess I am just an inquisitive person. I like culture and my parents brought me to the south when I was much younger to explore for homes and live for about a year in Alabama, but also through TN and MS. I am really proud to have made my decision to come visit TN and see something I don't have much exposure to instead of the average Vegas or cruise vacation. Thank you for having me in your city.

If you're a TV turned into real life fan then there's the locations from TV's Nashville: Bluebird Cafe, Lower Broadway, Percy Priest Park.

Also from American Pickers they have their Nashville store open here too (except today since they are filming there...).

Diners, Drive Ins and Dives also featured Martin's BBQ in Nolensville too.

Preacher's Daughters has a family from Spring Hill but not sure anybody is wanting to add that type of drama to their lives.
