Better squirrels than raccoons. They’re clever and not at all afraid of us as they eat all the bird food. Masked bandits indeed!

If you get a bird seed mix with enough hot pepper powder in it the squirrels will avoid it and the birds won't notice. I once saw a squirrel run up to a seed cake laced with hot pepper, sniff at it and run away. Victory! There has to be enough in the mix; I bought another seed cake that had hot pepper in it and watched as a squirrel devoured it. Fortunately I found a seed mix I like and the squirrels don't and I buy it in 25-lb. bags.

My bird feeders are 3ft and 5ft from my front door, under the overhang from my roof. If I put anything in them besides safflower, the damn squirrels sit and eat til the seeds are gone.

Squirrels (as well as blue jays and sometimes cardinals) love peanuts. Birds and squirrels like sunflower seeds. Finches, sparrows, doves, and cardinals like safflower seeds but squirrels won't touch it, as long as they have peanuts!

What's more expensive? Peanuts, sunflower seeds, or safflower seeds?
I got a critter blend, with mostly sunflower seeds and corn and I have some peanuts ordered. The peanuts are expensive.

It’s easy to understand why the squirrels would prefer the birds seed, instead of working to get to the peanut or the sunflower kernel. It seems like they don’t like the corn.

I don't feed squirrels. I used to not have to worry about them but now that the trees are big I see the little pigs trying to steal from the bird feeder. I will only put out feeders that they can't get to.

Just buy a big bag of unsalted ones at the grocery. They're still in the shells so you'll have those lying around when the squirrels are finished.

From Sex and The City (Carrie Bradshaw): Squirrels are just rats with cuter clothes.

No squirrels don't really like corn unless there's not much else and peanuts aren't really that much work for them. That's why I give THEM the peanuts, which a few birds like (including nasty grackles, but you can only do so much!) and the birds safflower seed. They each have their own...and I do like the squirrels but yes, peanuts are expensive.

Hahahaha! You cannot fill a squirrel up. And squirrels have nothing to do all day except figure out ways to get into your bird feeders. Take away that fluffy tail and a squirrel is nothing more than a rat.

We had skunks living under our porch once. They are better than squirrels. They shared nicely with the feral cats and never once sprayed anything. We did screen the porch off after they left.
