Actually one of the maintenance men has had a trap set up with peanuts and it has caught a few of them so far. And he CLAIMS he is driving them out far away. Yet the problem persists. Hopefully we will catch some more and that will end this.

Nope. Squirrels are born every year, usually two litters a year. You can take them away, let them go to be someone else's problem, and have new ones move in. Maybe it's time to embrace the squirrels as part of living in Chicago and adopt a new attitude toward them.

At this point the only option left is to get poison. What is the most affordable and best kind to get and where would we get it? Thank you
Before you poison them, I'd ask you if there's room to send a Jack Russel terrier up there. Those dogs LIVE for this kind of work. It's even better if you can provide illumination up there. If this plan fails, then poison is an option. (But, the dogs will LOVE this operation.)

If you have A LOT of squirrels, then 4-5 dogs should do the trick. Won't take long either. 15 minutes, tops.

I got nothing helpful about squirrels, but we called the "code enforcers" once, when we were young and dumb.

We asked the landlord to fix the leaky roof, instead, he painted the front of the building. The painters managed to make the roof leaks worse, to the point that we stapled plastic to the ceiling and walls, so we could use our rooms.

When we called the city, they sent out inspectors who said we could no longer use the attic without fire sprinklers being installed, AND they somehow sealed off the only source of heat in the house, old, illegal gas heaters.

I don't remember if the roof got fixed, but the landlord managed to evict us by claiming his mother was moving in.
