Hi there, I would like to hear based on what it's like now rather than in the past what you like and don't like about living in McCook. Thanks in advance!

Thumbs up McCook in the present

Hi there!

I live in Stratton (35 miles West of McCook), but I attend college in McCook and my son goes to preschool there as well. I think it is a great town - the perfect size! And the people are very friendly and helpful. Just last week my dad needed a tool for his vehicle and went to a shop to purchase one but it ended up being way too expensive for his one time use. Well, the gentleman who was supposed to be selling him the tool told him that he could borrow his own personal one, because he didn't see the use of selling him a tool my dad would only use once. He had never met my dad before, yet he was willing to go out of his way and even lose a sell to help him out. I had never heard of such a thing! My dad used it, brought it back the next day and will I'm sure, be a customer there for life. These are the kind of people you will meet, kind and generous through and through. I've only lived here for two years, so I didn't grow up in the area with built-in relationships forged, yet I feel like the people are great to us "outsiders!"

My son goes to Peace Lutheran Creative Preschool and he and I both love it there! He gets a very good education from them and the teachers are fabulous! Ms. Kerri is the head of the preschool and you couldn't ask for a nicer, more caring teacher for your child's first taste of school! I am not religious at all, yet I have never felt it to pushed upon me, or even brought up unless I have said something first. They do all sorts of activities and he always has something new to tell me or show me when I pick him up! The cost is very affordable for what he's getting out of it. And he has made so many little friends there!

The businesses are great as well, and more continue to develop. One in particular that comes to mind is Game On which offers comic books, video games, and the like, and they really try to cater to everyone from kids to adults, and even have get togethers and tournament challenges. Cody Dame (the owner) also owns two other businesses in town - Spotlight Studios and Divine Productions. The movie theatre in town only has three screens, with is sufficient I suppose - though I'm used to many more and am sometimes disappointed that a film is only available for a short time. They do offer free kid's movies from the end of October to the end of December though, which is fantastic!

The community college in McCook has a lot to offer! They have classes that I didn't have access to at the big four year I was going to in a different state. Once you're finished with your Associates, you can transfer to three different colleges (Fort Hays, Chadron State, and Bellevue) and know that every single class you take will transfer with you as well. No surprises! And I'm very happy with the teachers there - they seem to really enjoy teaching and they know what they're talking about! Rick Johnson in the Art Dept and Megan Friesen in the English Dept are especially knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. The college really tries to make sure that a student will succeed.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions feel free to PM me!
