Hey all, boy we are counting down the days till we leave on our trip. We need are in desperate need of cooler weather!! The heat here is at an almost unbearable level. Today is 117, and it has been triple digits since Wed and will be this way until this coming Thursday. I am going to hate to see my air conditioning bill for this month. Even at night it is in the 80's. Does NH ever experience triple digit days? Is there a lot of high humdity along with the heat there? The humidity has been crazy here at night. My poor daughter has been having a very hard time breathing, the air is so bad right now. Her asthma flares up as the air gets stale, hot and smoggy. It breaks my heart to see her using her inhaler and just being scared cuz it is hard to breathe when the weather is like this. Does NH have problems with smog? If so, I am sure it is nothing like So Cali, atleast I hope not. I would love for my daughter to be able to take a deep breath of fresh clean air. Does anyone here deal with asthma? I was just wondering if cold weather makes it flair up like hot weather does.

Only on rare occasions will you see over 100 deg. There can be humidity. You will see that in July and parts of August. The valleys between ranges can get steamy. In spring there is pollen issues with trees and at the end of August with ragweed. She will have quite a few less flare-ups here. The air will be much cleaner with virtually no smog issues. The further north you go, the better.

I don't have asthma, but I do deal with lots of allergies. When I visit NH, they almost seem to disappear. Here on the Cape I suffer greatly. Between the mold, mildew, oak and pine pollen, I can be pretty miserable. Every time I head to the mountains, my sinuses clear up and my tension goes away. I think your daughter will be very happy to finally breathe easier.

Suzet - My stepson has asthma and whenever he's been in NH he has no problems with it - he is usually in the North Conway region, which I *think* is north of Keene. I had a LOT of allergy problems when we lived in NYS and since moving here I have had no problems at all. Is your daughter's asthma triggered by environmental factors? I know some people have asthma which is worse with cold weather and/or exercise-induced asthma, so you may have to keep an eye on her just to make sure her asthma is "strictly" the smog, humidity-induced kind. Overall, though, I think she would probably be better in NH than in So Cali......

It's actually on the east border near Maine on Rt 16. It's in the eastern part of the White Mountain forest. Just across the border is Fryeburg, ME.

Silly Wabbit! HEHEHEHEHEHEHE!!!!!!!!

When we lived in MD, my oldest never had an allergy problem. He did have cough induced asthma that flaired up with colds.

EVERY time we went to NH whether for a weekend or 10 days, he would come home sick and we couldn't figure out why when he wasn't around anybody who was sick. Now that we live in upstate NY, both my sons have been sick so much over the years, we FINALLY figured out with the help of specialists that it has been allergies all along. You would think we'd have more trouble in MD where the air isn't that great but instead we get up here where it's beautiful and can't breathe often throughout the year because of whatever vegetation that is here in New England compared to back home.

It has affected my whole family to the point that my husband had to get tubes in his ears from chronic sinus and ear infections since moving here. We were hardly ever sick back home.

Granted, now that we have found Clariton helps, I am back to greatly considering moving to NH where my SIL lives. I think we need to take another trip there now and give the kids Clariton at the first sign of symptoms to test my theory that they will still go away as quickly. ;-)

My daughters asthma is mostly from the environment. When the air gets stale and smoggy (the smog is so bad out here), that is when she gets the tight chest, and shortness of breath. She has it mild in comparison to some a couple other people we know. She is lucky in that her inhaler is usually all she needs to help clear it up. I have chronic sinus problems. I have had nasal surgery once, and now I need it again. I use the nasal nose strips everynight so I can breathe. I cant take any kind of nasal decongestant, due to my panic attacks, they make my heart race way too much.
I have heard from people that moving to New England might make my sinuses worse, do to the lush landscape. We will see, and keep my fingers crossed for my daughter and myself. You would think the fresh air would do wonders for us...hopefully it will. isis, I hope the Clariton works for everyone on your next visit to NH. windchimes and bry, thanks for the encouraging words.

Believe it or not, the Cape has big time smog problems as well. You wouldn't think so being on the ocean and all, but the "bad" air gets sent to us from the larger cities to the west. It gets here and it just settles in. The town of Truro (almost to the tip) recorded one of the worst air qualities in the area. Couple that with major pollen from the oaks and pines, it can be tough on kids with respiratory problems. It kicks my butt a few times a year.

As for the words, right back at ya! It's why I like this forum. We are all doing something similar in our lives. Trying to make a change for the better. I concider it a large support group and I have fun talking with you guys. Everyone, for the most part, has been very supportive and given great and honest advice. You can't get any better than that.

Well, that makes sense - Don't forget - I'm a transplanted flatlander and I'm also VERY directionally challenged! I can get lost very easily!

Heck, we just seem to be north of everything! <g>.......If I ever have to do a lot of driving to different areas, I'll definitely need to get a GPS or who knows where I'll end up!

Suzet - Try Zyrtec - it doesn't have the same ingredients as a lot of the allergy meds and decongestants - I also have to be careful because of panic attacks and Zyrtec worked for me in NY and never created any anxiety/racing heart/panic stuff. Since we've been up here I haven't needed the Zyrtec at all.
