Can someone give me an idea how bad the commute will be from Londonderry to JFK Federal BLDG in Boston? Londonderry is where my family is, I would like to live near them.
I lived in NH in 2001 and remember the traffic jam that would happen on the NH/MA line when the lanes went from I think 4 to 2. Are there any plans to widen that all the way through. Are there any plans for a mass transit rail system between the two cities?
But be forewarned.
Traffic can be backed up from the Lawrence/Merrimack bridge - sometimes to Route 495 and sometimes to 128.
Then Route 93 can be backed up to Medford or Stoneham.
If you leave early it helps. Real early.
Excluding construction.
One driver pulls over to check something - everything backs up.
One PD car with lights on in either side - everything backs up.
And remember, at this time of high unemployment - this may not be normal but actually light traffic.
And remember also, Friday afternoon/evening everyone who can get away does - heading north.
I have been doing this commute for years. I take the Boston Express bus from Exit 4 to downtown Boston. This bus stops at State Street near the Historic Statehouse. JFK Bldg is a short walk north. I take the 0530 bus in order to avoid most of the inbound traffic and the 1545 (3:45 PM) bus home for the same reason. That bus leaves South Station. The fare is $85 round trip using a 10 trip pass.
The ride in takes about 50 min and the ride home an hour to an hour and a half. Recently outbound delays have taken more time than that. The time does not have to be completely wasted as the bus has Wi-Fi or you can read or sleep. If you have any more questions please PM me.
I have little motivation for another degree but I can take advantage of the WiFi so that when I get home I have taken care of all my internet "stuff". Its pricey though, at $17 round trip with an estimated 20 workdays a month that's $340 monthly times 12 months equals $4080 plus that 5.7% of my salary, it ain't cheap to work in Boston and live in NH. This also doesn't account for the extra time for commuting although my job would allow me to take the early bus both ways.
Its a hard consideration, there is an office in Manchester and Boston, returning to the States at either locations, I would be in identical spots with identical pay, the difference and why I would commute is that the office is 3x larger in Boston then Manchester so the availability of opportunities to advance/promote is much greater.
Don't do it. It's not worth the headache, and hassle. Why waste two hours of your day commuting when you could live a lot closer to your job. Cost of living in NH is only slightly less than Mass so there is no real savings to living in the granite state until you are ready to retire. While NH is a great state, it not a place to find a good career. I believe it's best to move closer to Boston, then when you are ready to retire move back to NH.
