Hi Everyone!

My family and I will be relocating from California to New Hampshire.... most likely my husband will be working in Berlin. Is Berlin the most populated town in Coos county? Is it good for children or is there a better city for families to move to within an hour of Berlin? How do you feel about Northern New Hampshire? My husband is from New England but myself and the kids have never been there. Feel free to tell me everything I should know about living in New England

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate it and look forward to hearing from you.

Have a great day

Not to be completely out of line but I suggest you get familiar with the Lahout's clothing store across the mountain in Littleton before winter. Berlin is a recent factory town that has been looking for another way to remain economically viable. Home and housing are a bargain. if the California you are moving from is on the coast Berlin will be very different. It will be much more like rural Cali.

If suggest you take the time to visit Berlin and the rest of the North country for a couple of weeks to reduce the surprises. Just fly to Manchester, NH and rent a car. You will need a good winter car. I highly recommend Subaru AWD with four good snow tires.

It's a mill town where all of the mills are closed.

In an attempt to add some jobs to Berlin the state of New Hampshire constructed a new prison there.

Now, some people say that a prison town is safer because there are more security/police there while others do not.

Bargain priced homes though. You will live like a king/queen coming from California.

Not a bad drive to go shopping in Canada. Good stuff cheap up there.

Is Gorham better to live for families than Berlin or about the same? I'm hoping my teenagers won't be completely miserable/bored LOL

Both are rural towns, Gorham is a bit more touristy since it is closer to the Mt. Washington Auto Road and Pinkham Notch. Bartlett and Jackson are south of there, but lots of seasonal properties and fewer residents live there all year. Milan to the north of Berlin is more rural with a somewhat higher median household income. The demographics in the area lean heavily toward elderly as many families and younger people have left for job opportunities elsewhere.

Unless your kids take to school and winter sports January and February are going to be very long months.

I'm curious what kind of job brings a family cross-country to Berlin, NH?
